It’s official. I’ve decided to boycott the NBA for a year.
I’m already three days into the program and feeling great! I mean, sure I’ve had temptations. I saw two stories on ESPN.com today- both about players and the extensions they just signed, but I managed rather easily to avoid reading either.
Some might ask, “why boycott the NBA?”
Fair enough question. Certainly after getting a good look at what passes for ‘world-class referees’ according to FIFA, it’s almost reasonable to suggest that the NBA doesn’t deserve a boycott.
The ratings were up this year. The playoffs dramatic. LeBron is coming on, and wooo!
Forget it. Clearly, the NBA does not care a whit about actual basketball. The product this league puts out there is about as close to professional wrestling as I’ve seen a genuine sport devolve. I have never been a NBA conspiracist, nor do I believe that the outcomes of the events are fixed. But the role to which the referees have been elevated in the NBA is simply no longer entertaining to me as a fan.
At any rate, I will speak no further on it. I just decided that even ranting would break my boycott. I’ll keep you posted, but until July 2007 (at least), the ‘pro basketball’ league is dead to me!
